Blog 8: Independent Component 1 Proposal

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
I haven't decided exactly what I want but for now I am thinking about an extra 30 hours of mentorship. Theres a lot of different projects happening so its hard when I come at different times. If I worked constantly then maybe I can focus on one project but its possible I can do something in November when they do the award shows. My mentor told me in November is when they do the latino award shows and will be busy with plans then so I'm planning to get a handful of hours next month. This is why I'm not decided on what I want to do yet because I won't get enough information until the date closes in. So for now I will say extra 30 hours until I can actually give the details on the projects.
2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
I'm positive my aunt will make me do research on influencers, sit in meetings and possibly assist her in the projects. Since the agency is really fast paced with deadlines I believe I will be working on different projects with different influencers. I can probably make a list of 2 or 3 that I worked on to show the collaboration of hours reaching 30.
3.  Explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.
I believe doing extra projects and hours at the agency will help me realize the quick pace and multitasking qualities that are essential. I will socialize with her co workers and learn how to work with a team by observing my aunt or possibly doing projects on my own. This will help me adjust to the daily life in a marketers life and understand trends and ways of marketing that are successful.
4.  Update your Senior Project Hours log.
I have yet to go because I though transportation was a problem but I just discovered I will most likely be using Uber on Fridays and working with her then. I hope to try and go every other week at least so I can start piling hours and truly getting the feel of actually working there. I will update it as soon as possible.

Blog 7 - Second Interview Preparation

1.  Who is your mentor and where do they work?  If their workplace does not reflect their expertise, what makes them an expert? My mentor is my aunt, Claudia Yuskoff, who works for a Hispanic advertising company called Conill. I feel like my aunt is considered an expert because she worked in the marketing and advertising field for good amount of time. The way promotions work is based on being able to prove yourself for every project instead of places that promote yearly. You can get promoted randomly from the agency side and my aunt was recognized for her extraordinary skills with quick promotions to a respected position. I witnessed that she contained a lot of confidence, social skills, leadership qualities and quickly realized why she got promoted so quickly. I already interviewed her but I feel like I can still soak in information from her.
2.  What five questions will you ask them about their background?
I already gained some basic knowledge of marketing from the first interview but I think I'll focus on getting in deeper on marketing subjects. I also wanted to know how she got pulled into the company and all her past experiences she had to do. It's common for people to get pulled in by a connection/friend they know in the business field especially. I will also ask about the steps she did and what she worked on in order to get promoted. She told me several books she read so I'm thinking I can close the interview off with deeper knowledge about the books and online information she looked for exactly.

Blog 6 - Advisory Prep

1. What has worked well for you concerning senior project this year?  What has made it a positive experience for you?  What I feel has worked well for me is keeping a positive attitude through this project. A lot of people said to pick something you're not interested in because you'll end up hating it but I'm kind of thrilled to gain the experience. It saves me time to see if I really could see myself doing something like this in the future. I think whats made this a positive experience for me is the mentor ship hours. I was able to participate in the reality of my field directly and I gained a lot from it. I enjoyed the people who worked in the office and the environment, it was a really social and friendly environment. I had fun and was treated well so I actually look forward to going back to Conill.

2. What are you finding difficult concerning senior project?  How can you adapt to make that portion work better for you?  How might the senior team help? I find doing some of the interviews can be difficult because sometimes people in your field are extremely busy. The interview can already be rough but getting marked down by not doing it in person can be frustrating.  I feel Skype can still be valuable and if the face to face is a huge problem you could ask to turn on the camera. You can always adapt by finding someone local but sometimes they might not be ideal and you sacrifice a person with quality over Skype for a low quality face to face interview. I believe I gained a lot of information from my Skype interview and me and my mentor were still face to face because of cameras. So I got to see her body reactions to her answers and advice. I think becoming more lenient on the interview and being more open due to good interviews being hard to find could be helpful.

Blog 5 - Interview 1 Reflection

Interview Audio

1. What is the most important thing I learned from the interview?  Is there anything I would do differently for other interviews? I Believed this interview was actually really helpful because I soaked in a lot of information. One of the biggest things that helped me is narrowing down my topic. I didn't know the different specializations in marketing because you can choose to work for the agency side, the client side, or the influencer side. My aunt works for the agency side so the knowledge I obtained was from that perspective. The agency side works in a big office with other people who collaborate on a project for the client side. They find an influencer and have a plan played out on how this person will promote the brand or product of the client. You will then present this on the date assigned to your client and they will respond positively or negatively. I learned a lot more but it would be too much to type out and this was the thing that stood out to me. I think this interview went well but I ended up getting more information even after I ended the recording that was valuable.  I mean a obvious change I'm going to make is different questions but besides that and maybe keeping the interview recording longer is nothing else.

2. Did I get additional resources and contacts?  What is the most useful?  Why? Yes I did, my mentor told me I could probably interview people in her field but a different aspect like maybe the writers, or the advertisers, influencers. I think one that might be hard but would be nice is getting someone who did a commercial for a company I like. So if I interviewed a influencer like LeBron James who did commercials for Nike it would be amazing but hard. I have several choices of who I want to interview next so it'll be a surprise. A resource that I really liked was the final commercial T-Mobile created from the EDM (Electric Dance Music) Festival "Electric Zoo". After the interview I talked to her about the concert since she went and she said it worked out well. They partnered with Deorro who was the star in the commercial, so I think this was the most useful because it was the end product and really interesting to me since I did research for all this. CLICK ME <---- The commercial.

3. What makes my interviewee qualified to help me?  I Believe my aunt is very successful in the marketing/advertising field. Just from volunteering I could see she has very good leadership qualities but good patience. I got to go into a meeting where she talked to a influencer who was kind of giving her a tough time on due dates. They were both at each others necks but they eventually came into a agreement that would be able to satisfy both of them. I don't even think she was leading the meeting but when she realized her coworkers were having a hard time convincing him to post his work she took charge. I realized her dominance, social, dedication and leadership traits is what made her get promoted so quickly. I truly believe that my aunt is an expert in this field.

4. Input
I wanted to add some input on the interview to improve the interview is laid out. I think one problem was the questions that were given to us were to bland and vague. I was talking to my Mentor and she said they were not very well written  and I heard a lot of other students say the same as well. But I think in all fairness it's too hard to create 5 questions that relate to every single students topics. In my opinion I feel the interview would be much smoother if we made our own questions. I also maybe thought that we should have a few questions to lead us in to conversation. What I mean by that is I think we all felt pressured to focus on the questions when sometimes info not relating to the questions could be helpful as well. I spent a extra 15-20 minutes talking about other things but I didn't know if it was irrelevant because most of it didn't directly answer any of my questions I had. Other than that I did like the Interview because I did gain a lot from it.

Blog 4 - House Advisory Prep 1

While going through my mentor ship experience I hope to gain skills like stronger interpersonal and communication skills, teamwork skills, expand my creativeness, and learn better commercial awareness. Communication skills kind of goes in hand in hand with teamwork because you learn how to associate with members on the same project. You must know how to understand the influencer's needs as well as the clients, and be able to relay this information to your team to start a marketing campaign. Teamwork skills has to do with communication again as well but just making sure everyone gets their part done or even stepping up as a leader can help when working with others. It can even land you promotions if you are seen being a leader. Helping teammates keep on track with patience but also with some assertiveness can go a long way. I hope to become even more creative as well because creativeness is huge in marketing. I want to be a leader in the marketing field and to do that I must be the one to come up with the marketing campaigns that are extraordinary and successful. And the last thing I hope to learn is better commercial awareness, which means I will probably need to start making social media pages like Instagram and twitter. Most of marketing and advertising is done online now so it helps to keep up with current trends. It also the way you gain influencers to promote for your client. Influencer's are the popular people who can advertise for you usually because they have a pretty huge following. I know their will be much more to master in this field but I feel like acquiring these attributes will permit me a much easier foot into the field.

Blog # 3- Interview Preperation

1.  Who do you plan to interview?  Why?
I Plan to Interview my aunt (Mentor) for the first interview since I am already close to her and it will be a smoother interview for me to practice for my others. As well that it will also be easier to get to interview her boss or coworkers another time if I interview her first. I feel that having her as my first interviewer will help me on others because maybe she will tell me several good questions to ask connected to business/marketing. Plus the Fact that I will have a feeling for the interviews so when I interview coworkers I will be more confident.

2.  Five questions will be assigned to all seniors to ask.  What additional questions do you plan to ask?
-Why did you chose to go into marketing? And was it your first choice or were you looking into something else?
-What things make you enjoy your job that gets you up happy in the morning?
-What were the most memorable events they sent you to and why?
- How does your schedule usually look on a normal day?
-What are things you do to work efficiently grouped with coworkers on a project?

Summer Mentorship

1. List the contact name, phone number, and organization of the person with whom you volunteered.
Claudia Yuskoff- (310) 779-6884
Organization- CONILL
2. What qualified this person as an expert in your topic choice?
My aunt has been very successful in the marketing business and her hard work and dedication has moved her higher in positions. She knows how to communicate with her co-workers and her clients. She has good patience and her leadership is superb.
3. List three questions for further exploration now that you've completed your summer hours.
-How has social media effected the way of marketing?
-What is the best way to appeal to your client?
-How do you come into agreements when your client is playing hard?
4. What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why? This was one of my first experiences in a work force. It taught me the basics of communication among coworkers and working on projects individually but coming together as a group at the end. So In the end I think the most important thing I gained is working side to side with people and collaborating on ideas.
5. What is your senior project topic going to be?  How did mentor ship help you make your decision?  Please explain. Im going to keep my senior project as marketing. I was actually really excited for the experience during the summer and I enjoyed it when I worked there. So Having a good experience at Conill really influenced me to keep on with marketing. It was a nice building with over 200 workers in Conill's offices, my aunt introduced me to a lot of  people who work on the same projects as her. Everyone was friendly and cooperative and I was able to sit in a meeting with them to see how they worked with their clients. I really liked the flow of everything and at the end of the day I knew I could see myself working in marketing in the future.
